Podcasting
Podcasting, what a concept! I was amazed by the extensive collection of podcasts on the Internet. I was not sure exactly what it was but now, I'm liking podcasting. I was brainstorming ideas and came up with having students do a question and answer on topics covered in class podcasting series or a myth or fact podcasting series. What ideas do you have for Health and Physical Education?

Toni,
Students could do interviews of parents on health issues in their family. This could be quality time (hopefully) with family members and connect them with family history.
Hey Toni! I don't necessarily have an idea for podcasting for our content area, but I did brainstorm an idea for digital video. My idea was... instead of having the 8th graders take a mid-term or cummulative semester exam, how about having the students produce a digital video or PSA that entails all that they have learned throughout the semester. This would promote and incorporate technology and there would be multiple levels of assessment. Their treatments, storyboards, editing, and of course content would make a great final exam/activity. I thought it might awaken a different style of learning, and possibley those that are not good test taker may have a chance to accel. What do you think? Do you think administration would be Ok with that idea? How about parents?
Bob, I love your idea. This particular type of experience will definitely connect to students on a personal level. It is a win-win situation; not only are they spending quality time with family members but they are learning a vast amount of knowledge about their family history, which we all know is very important in our pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. I'm going to use your idea for sure!
Christina, I remember you discussing this with me earlier and I love this idea alot. I think that you would need to write up the framework of the assessment and then write a persuasive essay (remember those) and provide good supporting arguments for using digital videoing or podcasts as an appropiate form of a comprhensive assessment. I would love to get with you and really plan this idea out and get this idea on the roll for next year. I had been thinking of a similiar idea to use with my students, but I like your idea better!
I am sure that the administration and parents would love such an authentic and original assessment idea that really showcases student learning on a more personal level. This type of assessment should leave a lasting impression on each student who completes it!
